Would you purchase a home that’s haunted, let alone a mansion that’s haunted? Well, there’s one up for sale right now going for nearly $16 million. The Sword Gate House located at 32 Legare Street in Charleston, South Carolina, is one of the oldest in the area and it's listed with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

At more than 200 years old, the Sword Gate House is 17,000 square feet large, offers nine bedrooms and 13 fireplaces. It also features a wrought iron gate for its entrance, giving inspiration to the name “Sword Gate House.” The home went through renovation in the early 2000s but maintained the Federal Era details.

It was once owned by a granddaughter of President Abraham Lincoln in the 1930s. The property has also operated as the Madame Talvande’s Girl School and an inn at one time.

As to what haunts the mansion? There’s a story that when the mansion operated as an all-girls school, the headmistress was stern and strict. She was furious to learn when one of her students was involved with a boy. To keep her students from having relationships with boys, she erected a tall gate and fence to surround the school. Story has it that her mission lives on even today as her ghostly figure can been seen standing near the gates watchful of all who pass. Some have also reported seeing her full-body apparition roaming the halls of the house.
