The South Carolina State Hospital in Columbia dates back to 1821 and was first known as the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum. It was one of the very first public mental hospitals established in the United States. Famous architect, Robert Mills, designed the building and South Carolina was the second state in the country at that time to put money aside for such a building for the care and treatment of the mentally ill.
An old, abandoned asylum would prove to be pretty creepy no matter, but this one is known to have some eerie ghost stories surrounding it. The property is said to be haunted by those who once called the asylum their home, patients that resided there. Witnesses have reported seeing strange shadows, hearing residual hospital sounds, and hearing the disembodied cries and screams of former patients.
